CFD and Evacuation Modelling

We use Fire Dynamics Simulator to carry out Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)  simulations. These simulations are especially useful for smoke control options in flats, car parks, firefighting lobbies and atria but can be used for a wide variety of situations.

We use Pathfinder software to carry out Evacuation modelling. This can be an extremely useful tool to assist in demonstrating compliance and also to develop evacuation plans for your premises.

What are the benefits?

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling for fire safety offers a broad range of benefits, making it a useful tool in both the design phase of buildings and infrastructure and in the analysis of fire safety strategies. Here are some key benefits:

  1. Predictive Analysis: CFD models can estimate how fire and smoke may spread within a given space, allowing for the assessment of fire safety measures' effectiveness. This predictive capability works alongside wider fire engineering design to assist in designing safer buildings and for developing emergency evacuation plans.

  2. Risk Assessment and Management: By simulating various fire scenarios, CFD helps in identifying potential risks and vulnerabilities in building designs. This allows architects and engineers to modify designs to improve safety before construction even begins.

  3. Optimization of Fire Safety Systems: CFD can be used to optimize the placement and performance of fire safety systems, such as sprinklers, smoke detectors, and ventilation systems, ensuring they are as effective as possible in the event of a fire.

  4. Smoke Management: CFD modelling can simulate the movement of smoke through a building, this assists in designing smoke management systems to effectively control smoke spread.

  5. Emergency Response and Evacuation Planning: Emergency response strategies can be optimized, and evacuation plans can be designed to minimize exposure to hazards. The outputs are effective training resources.
